Sometimes, I look around and feel like I’m behind in life.
Rationally, I know comparison is the thief of joy. But in reality, each time my mind compares myself to others comes with an acerbic sting. It’s not just a passing thought, but a visceral ache that pulls me into my dark inner depths.
That wound? It's a younger part of me calling out to be witnessed, loved, and integrated. It will never completely go away because I grew up constantly being compared - in looks, performance, behavior, skills, and talents.
Dare I say this internalized pattern of comparison feels systemic… especially within Korean society?
It’s an implicit, insidious form of control. A psychological thread woven into the cultural fabric by systems of oppression, designed to disconnect our souls from our inherent belonging to all of Divine Life.
It shows up subtly: when our minds go straight to our own waistline after seeing someone confidently wearing a primly tucked-in shirt, or when we hear the term "엄친아" (mom’s friend’s perfect son) during a casual conversation. It's even in the way we uplift (or crush down) distant relatives based on their externally validated accomplishments or (alternative life choices.)
We've been deceived into believing that the pain of this disconnection could be soothed by being "better" than someone else.
Soothed?
No. It's more like covering a blistering wound with a bandaged lined with salt and gravel.
Painful and retraumatizing.
So, what can we do?
We may not control the outside world, but we can take accountability for how we engage with it internally.
This means being willing to look inside of ourselves and examine the deep rooted patterns and subconscious beliefs that keep us repeating cycles that end us up in situations where we feel hurt and used, or worse.
By examining these patterns with the light of our compassionate awareness, we give ourselves the opportunity to liberate ourselves.
We invite ourselves into a world where we are free, unrestricted and unburdened, where we can intentionally fill our days with love, joy, and unlimited creative flow anchored in structures that serve us.
The most empowering truth? You hold the keys to your internal world. Even if you’re not ready to believe that yet, it’s yours to reclaim.
And as you begin to heal yourself, you send ripples of change through the collective.
